Vaccines protect millions of Americans every year and have helped prevent and eliminate once widespread diseases. While the benefits of vaccines far outweigh their minimal risks, injuries can occur in rare circumstances. That’s why the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program or VICP exists. Before VICP, patients did not have an efficient way to get compensated if they experienced a rare but serious vaccine injury. So, in 1986, with bipartisan support, the VICP was signed into law. It offers a fair, efficient alternative to years of costly litigation for those filing a claim for an injury.
