WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 19, 2022) – The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) Executive Vice President for Public Affairs Debra DeShong has announced her decision to step down from PhRMA to explore new personal opportunities:
“When I came to PhRMA, I was energized by the opportunity to work for an industry while it was saving the world during a once-in-a-generation pandemic,” said Debra DeShong. “Being able to share the story behind the incredible science and wonderous innovations that happen every day in our companies has been as rewarding as I had hoped. At the same time, I was honored to be a part of the fight for meaningful solutions that to help make medicines more affordable for patients. While I am proud of our organization’s incredible and tireless work, I’ve made the tough decision to pursue new and different opportunities. As I am approaching the second half of my career, I realize that giving back is what ignites my passion. Whether it’s pursuing an opportunity in philanthropy, or just making more time in life to contribute, it’s time for me to jump into a new journey.”
“Debra has been a key member of the organization’s leadership team during what has been some of the more challenging moments for our industry in recent memory,” said PhRMA President and CEO Stephen J. Ubl. “As our members pulled us all out of a global pandemic and fought for patient-centered solutions to lower costs at the pharmacy, Debra’s leadership and support has been invaluable. She will be missed by her colleagues, and we all wish her the best in the next chapter of her distinguished career."
NOTE: PhRMA’s Vice President for Public Affairs Priscilla VanderVeer will assume the role as interim head of the Public Affairs department.
