WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 22, 2025) – The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) announced today that AstraZeneca has joined the association. AstraZeneca is a biopharmaceutical research company that focuses on the discovery, development, and commercialization of prescription medicines in oncology, rare diseases and other life-threatening conditions.

“Our members are on the cutting edge of medical innovation,” said Stephen J. Ubl, PhRMA President and CEO. “Their investments in research, development and manufacturing help deliver lifesaving treatments and cures to patients and support millions of high-paying jobs for American workers. That’s why I am excited to welcome AstraZeneca to our association, a company with a long history of tackling big challenges and improving people’s lives. Pascal is a trusted leader, and I look forward to working with him and his team to strengthen America’s global leadership in innovation and to lowering out-of-pocket costs for patients at the pharmacy.”

AstraZeneca’s U.S. headquarters are based in Wilmington, Delaware, and they have approximately 18,400 employees working across 17 R&D, manufacturing and commercial sites spanning 12 states. Additionally, at the end of 2024 they announced $3.5 billion of capital investment in the U.S. to further expand the company’s research and manufacturing footprint by the end of 2026. The company will support PhRMA’s advocacy efforts to protect the American innovation ecosystem and ensure all patients can access and afford the medicines they need.

“In strengthening our partnership with PhRMA, we look forward to working together with its many members across the biopharmaceutical research industry at a time of unprecedented scientific advancement,” said Pascal Soriot, AstraZeneca’s Chief Executive Officer. “Right now, we are also expanding our presence in the United States with significant investments in research, development and manufacturing which support tens of thousands of American jobs that deliver innovative medicines for patients with life-threatening diseases. We are committed to working with PhRMA and policymakers to ensure the U.S. remains the global leader in biomedical innovation and that medicines are affordable for everyone who needs them.”

Over the last decade, PhRMA member companies have invested more than $800 billion in the search for new treatments and cures, and they support nearly five million jobs in the United States.
