Improving the quality and value of health care—and controlling its costs—are imperatives for the health of Americans and for our economy. Prescription medicines play an important role in achieving both of those goals, especially in light of our aging population and the large number of people living with chronic conditions.

With optimal use, medicines can improve health outcomes and help to reduce the need for costly healthcare services, such as emergency room admissions, hospital stays, surgeries, and long-term care. Patients are healthier and unnecessary medical expenditures are avoided.

As more Americans gain access to health care, it is important that they also have access to the medicines they need. Suboptimal use of prescription medications remains a challenge, and there is a large opportunity for patients and their healthcare providers to enhance the quality and efficiency of our healthcare system by improving the use of medicines.
