Across the country, patients and caregivers part of Voters for Cures are speaking out—and their message is clear: Most Favored Nation (MFN) policies put access to care at risk. While Americans strongly support lowering out-of-pocket costs, they believe MFN is not the solution. Instead of importing failed foreign pricing schemes, voters want policymakers to focus on the real drivers of health care costs—especially the abusive practices of insurance companies and middlemen. In fact, 83% of Americans agree policymakers should crack down on insurers and middlemen, not restrict access to medicines.
Here are voters in their own words on MFN:
- “Some policymakers argue that importing foreign drug prices through Most Favored Nation pricing is the answer. But that approach doesn’t confront the real problem. Importing prices from other countries leaves PBM power untouched, offers no guarantee that patients will see savings, and distracts from reforms that could help immediately.” -- Stephen B, Pennsylvania
- “For families across Louisiana who rely on daily medications to manage chronic conditions, decisive action represents a meaningful shift toward accountability where it has long been missing. Just as importantly, lawmakers chose to focus on reforms that address the real problem instead of proposals like Most Favored Nation pricing, which could leave patients even worse off.” -- Ben O, Louisiana
- “I am still concerned about the Most Favored Nation pricing proposal that would tie our drug prices to those in other countries, as this won’t change how PBMs operate or even ensure that patients see lower out-of-pocket costs at the pharmacy counter. Chasing those ideas risks leaving the real drivers of cost and confusion untouched." -- Stacie T, Pennsylvania
- “I’ve seen patients end up in the ER over issues that could have been prevented with the right medication at the right time. That’s why proposals like the Most Favored Nation pricing idea worry me. MFN doesn’t address the daily barriers created by PBMs here at home, and it won’t stop them from pocketing rebates that should help patients.” -- Cristina B, Iowa
- “Some lawmakers keep floating the Most Favored Nation proposal as a backup plan. However, MFN doesn’t meaningfully address the problems people experience when they try to fill a prescription. Instead, it compares the United States to other countries without fixing the profit structures and access barriers that exist right here.” -- Amanda F, New York
Voters are sending a clear signal: MFN won’t fix what’s broken and could make access worse. Policymakers should reject government price controls and focus instead on reforms that rein in middlemen—the real drivers of health care costs.
