We’re committed to building an equitable health care system. To do that, it’s important to build trust, partner with communities and address barriers that stand between patients and their medicines. These themes came up at several events PhRMA participated in last month in Washington, D.C.
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Annual Legislative Conference (CBCF ALC)
U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) opened the panel by highlighting innovation and collaboration in addressing clinical trial diversity. The discussion, moderated by Anthony Coley, founding partner of Corner Office Strategies, featured:
- Tesheia Johnson Harris, senior advisor and network partner leader for Equitable Breakthroughs in Medicine Development (EQBMED)
- Reverend Dr. Leroy O. Perry, Jr., trusted messenger for EQBMED
- Dr. Darryl Sleep, head of global public health at Amgen
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s (CHCI) Leadership Conference
PhRMA’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Ybarra and Amy Hinojosa, president and CEO of MANA, A National Latina Organization, discussed barriers Hispanic patients face in accessing care. They explored policy solutions to support health equity, such as regulating insurers and PBMs and ensuring the 340B program benefits intended communities.
These discussions mirror actions we’re taking as an industry to address misinformation, enhance access to innovative clinical trials, tackle harmful practices by middlemen and ensure the 340B program serves its purpose. Together, we can advance health equity and improve patients’ lives.

Stephen J. Ubl
Stephen J. Ubl is president and chief executive officer of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), which represents America’s leading biopharmaceutical research companies. He led the industry’s defense of breakthrough R&D, successfully delaying an innovation-stifling device tax, and, in 2013, was recognized by a leading industry publication as one of 10 people to have a lasting impact on the medical technology industry.
Ubl has worked extensively with patient advocacy organizations in health policy, including longstanding service on the board of the National Health Council, a leading umbrella organization for voluntary health care organizations and has been personally involved with JDRF (formerly known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
He is routinely recognized as one of Washington’s most effective advocates. Ubl has been recognized on Business Insider’s “DC Healthcare Power Players” and Modern Healthcare’s “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.” He is identified as a top health influencer by Medical Marketing & Media and PR Week magazines.
