FACT SHEETDiabetes is a chronic disease caused by insufficient insulin production or development of resistance to insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that signals the body’s cells to absorb glucose from the blood for energy. Without it, cells are unable absorb glucose, leading to the disease we recognize as diabetes. More than 30 million Americans, or nearly 10 percent of the population, have diabetes.
