Andrew Powaleny is Senior Director of Public Affairs at PhRMA. He leads the organization's scientific communications where he works to educate about the value of the industry’s efforts to research and develop innovative medicines and vaccines. Andrew also spearheads the organization’s grassroots initiative, Voters for Cures, which includes patients and caregivers in the fight for access to medicine and biopharmaceutical innovation. In 2019, Andrew was the inaugural co-chair of The PRIDE Umbrella, PhRMA’s employee resource group for LGBTQ+ colleagues. He continues to regularly speak about the importance of greater inclusion in the life sciences industry and was a featured speaker of PhRMA’s Pathways to Success Graduate Summit in 2023.
Before joining PhRMA in 2015, Andrew worked as a communications consultant in Washington, DC and served as Deputy Press Secretary for the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce under then Chairman Fred Upton. Andrew has a degree from Eastern Connecticut State University with a major in public policy and government and minor in music. He is active as a runner and volunteer with the DC Front Runners; and served on its Board of Directors for three years as co-race director. Moreover, he is a member of the Association of LGBTQ Journalists, singer with The Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington, and mentor’s students through his alumni association with The Fund for American Studies.
