Biopharmaceutical companies are conducting clinical trials across the country, connecting patients with potential treatments and working toward new medicines and cures. PhRMA has created reports showcasing clinical trials in a number of states, highlighting their importance to patient health as well as the contribution to the local economy. The reports focus on clinical trials targeting six of the nation’s most debilitating diseases: asthma, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, mental illness, and stroke. Clinical trials generate the evidence needed to bring safe and effective medicines to patients. But did you know that they're also a powerful engine for jobs and local economies?

A 2013 review of biopharmaceutical industry-sponsored, site-based clinical trials across the United States found that the industry:

  • Sponsored nearly 6,200 site-based clinical trials with 1.1 million participants
  • Invested close to $10 billion to conduct clinical trials at sites in 50 states
  • Generated $25 billion in economic impact from conducting clinical trials in communities throughout the country
