Welcome news in two high-profile cancer battles

America’s biopharmaceutical companies are proud to be at the forefront of the battle against cancer, working tirelessly to develop innovative approaches for more effective treatments for patients.  Over the weekend, we saw this innovation at work when former President Jimmy Carter announced that he is cancer free following treatment for metastatic melanoma since August.  This follows on the heels of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s announcement last month that he is also “100 percent cancer-free.”

President Carter and Governor Hogan have spoken openly about their treatment plans, which included surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and new cutting-edge immunotherapy treatments. Unlike many cancer medicines that kill cancer cells, immunotherapy treatments harness the body’s own immune system to fight the cancer and are among the most promising new approaches to treating this complicated disease. 

Today, researchers are hard at work with 836 medicines and vaccines in development for cancer, 80 percent of which have the potential to be first-in-class treatments.  Our hope is that these treatments will turn many more cancer patients like President Carter and Governor Hogan into survivors.
