Medicare Monday: Who qualifies for Part D Extra Help?

Over the past couple months, we’ve taken a look at three hypothetical Medicare beneficiaries who qualify for the Extra Help program, also known as the low-income subsidy. Learn more about the different ways patients benefit from Extra Help.

  • Katie is a hypothetical patient who has been living with end-stage renal disease and is now six months post-kidney transplant, which qualifies her for Medicare before the age of 65.

  • Mateo is a hypothetical patient who has been managing multiple chronic conditions, including depression and cardiac comorbidities, specifically hypertension, hyperlipidemia, congestive heart failure (CHF) and atrial fibrillation.

The Extra Help program provides the assistance patients like Diane, Mateo and Katie need to access their medications. Changes to this benefit could result in limited choices or forced changes in prescribed treatment and put patients at unnecessary risk.
