President, CEO, National Psoriasis Foundation,
Randy Beranek joined the National Psoriasis Foundation as its President and CEO in May, 2008 bringing with him more than 28 years of executive-level experience in the national, nonprofit health industry.
During his tenure with the National Psoriasis Foundation, the organization has experienced unprecedented growth. During his first four years as President and CEO, the Foundation’s revenues grew by 117% while reducing administrative and fundraising expenses from 31% to 22%. The NPF’s research investment has increased from 11% of total expenses in FY08 to 25% in FY12. The NPF’s Advocacy Action Network grew in membership from 11,000 to 74,000 during this time. The organization succeeded in obtaining the first-ever psoriasis related appropriation from the U.S. Congress to establish a patient registry at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Under Randy’s leadership, the NPF’s Charity Navigator rating has moved from a single star to four-stars, the highest rating awarded by the nation’s leading evaluation service for non-profit organizations.
The rapid growth of the Foundation was facilitated by the organization’s installation of a five-year Strategic Plan that includes the doubling of revenue and a 12-fold increase in research investment. The plan has also led to the development of new, community based, volunteer driven divisions in nine major metropolitans areas across the U.S. As president and CEO of the National Psoriasis Foundation, Randy serves on the board of directors of the National Health Council and was elected as Vice Chair in January 2013. Additionally, Randy is the Chairman of the International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA) General Assembly.
Prior to joining the NPF, Randy spent more than 13 years with the American Diabetes Association. His tenure began in Sacramento, CA as Vice-President for Community Development of the ADA’s Western Region. There he introduced community development processes that led to the formation of year-round, volunteer driven divisions in California and throughout the association that are in operation to this day. He chaired numerous task forces and committees including the national community development project team, the 2001 National Field Staff Conference and in 1996, was one of three staff named to the ADA’s Strategic Planning Task Force.
Randy led reorganization efforts for both staff and volunteer structures in the Western Region that resulted in dramatically improved efficiencies. These changes served as the forerunner to the ADA’s merger to a single corporation in 1999. His scope of responsibility included volunteer development, business planning, staff management and recruitment, fundraising: including annual campaigns, special events, deferred giving and transactional campaigns. During his tenure, total public support increased more than four-fold.
Randy began his career in the non-profit health industry with the American Heart Association. His initial role was as a Field Representative in the former Iowa Affiliate in 1984. There he learned and embraced the principles of volunteer recruitment, community development, fundraising and results orientation that shaped his career. He also served as Director, Corporate Relations and Planned Giving and was responsible for exponential growth in workplace and individual giving. He was later recruited to join the development department at the AHA’s NationalCenter as a development consultant. There he directed the fundraising planning and implementation for 12 state-affiliated organizations. He later joined the field services division as Affiliate Management Consultant where he provided direct-line guidance for all day-to-day business operations to chief staff officers in six AHA affiliates.
Randy holds a B.A. degree in Communications and Rhetorical Criticism from the University of Iowa. He makes his home in Napa, CA.
