PhRMA on the State of the Union Address
PhRMA Statement on State of the Union Address
Washington, D.C. (January 29, 2014) — Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) President and CEO John J. Castellani issued the following statement:
"President Obama’s address comes at a time when America’s biopharmaceutical research companies are bringing pioneering new medicines to patients, supporting high-value American jobs and helping strengthen local communities and our national economy. Continued progress – the kind that President Obama urged for last night – is only possible, however, if we fully embrace innovation.
"The President referenced patent reform and we look forward to working with the Senate on targeted reforms to curb abusive patent litigation while maintaining incentives for biomedical innovation.
“We also agree with the President that a robust trade agenda that protects intellectual property will stimulate innovation and support the Administration’s efforts to obtain strong 21st century agreements.
"The biopharmaceutical research sector is committed to patients who depend on us to uncover the next treatment and cure. Critical to this mission are policies that will support one of the most innovative sectors of our economy – an industry that is not only making America healthier, but also generating the high-value jobs this country needs.
“We will continue to work with the Administration and members of Congress on bipartisan solutions that can help spur growth in the U.S. economy, ensure patient access to new medicines, and foster future development of life-saving medicines.”
The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) represents the country’s leading innovative biopharmaceutical research and biotechnology companies, which are devoted to discovering and developing medicines that enable patients to live longer, healthier, and more productive lives. Since 2000, PhRMA member companies have invested approximately $550 billion in the search for new treatments and cures, including an estimated $48.5 billion in 2012 alone.
